Just before summer and in the new year, many people decide that they are going to make significant lifestyle changes. However, when you work a full-time job and have adult responsibilities, staying motivated can be difficult. Getting up and getting started can be the hardest part of cultivating a new lifestyle. 

If you keep some of these tips in mind, you will be able to train your brain and stay motivated to be healthy every single day. 

Cultivate A Positive Self Image

Don’t start your journey towards a healthy lifestyle by berating yourself or putting yourself down. If you haven’t been eating healthy or exercising for a while, that is okay. Even athletes have periods where they don’t keep up with their regimen. Regardless of your past lifestyle, you can create new habits and have a more healthy lifestyle. It all starts when you forgive yourself and believe in your abilities and drive. A positive self-image and practising mindfulness will help you a lot when it comes to motivating yourself to be healthier – because you’ll be doing it for yourself. 

Say Your Affirmations

One of the best ways in which you can help your positive self-image and train yourself into becoming motivated is to say your affirmations. If you have a hard time believing that you can do something, encouraging yourself in the mirror is one of the best ways to make yourself feel better. Saying things such as ‘I can do everything I set my mind to’ and ‘I am dedicated and hard-working’ to yourself will train your brain to think those things too. This will help you when it comes to creating a healthier lifestyle. 

Set Realistic Goals

Staying on the right track is much easier if you set realistic goals. Having goals that are achievable will help you see your success much better, and reinforce the belief that you are doing the right thing. There are many examples of realistic goals that will help you see your progress, such as walking 5000 steps a day for a week or swimming 10 lengths every time you go swimming. Achievable goals will help you to stay on the right track and celebrate the hard work that goes into cultivating a healthy lifestyle. 

Get Enough Sleep

If you’re always tired and stressed, you will always relapse and go back to unhealthy habits. Tiredness is one of the largest causes of unhealthy eating and exercise habits. Getting enough sleep is imperative when it comes to staying healthy. Before bed, try to avoid phone and TV screens for at least an hour before you go to sleep. Blue light stimulates your brain and makes it harder for you to fall asleep. You should try to have a set bedtime each night, as your brain will get used to being tired at a certain time, meaning you can better schedule your sleep. Being refreshed and rested is important for sticking to a healthy lifestyle. 

Start With Small Changes

If you have a hard time suddenly changing your everyday lifestyle, it may be a better idea to start with just a few small changes. For example, start to have a healthy lunch every day and see how you get on. You could also put a small walk into your schedule after dinner, and see how you feel after doing that for a week. By just making a few small changes, you will quickly adjust to your new lifestyle, and keep you motivated to carry on with healthy lifestyle changes. 

Try New Recipes

If you have a problem with healthy eating, one of the best things you can do is revamp your everyday diet by trying new recipes. Look for new recipes from your favourite cuisines that use your favourite ingredients, but also include plenty of vegetables and protein. Try a few new recipes each week and experiment with flavour profiles and food choices. This way, you will be able to understand which healthy foods you enjoy the most and allow you to change your diet. Your diet can be healthy and have delicious dishes, which will motivate you to continue cooking healthy food.  

Nourish Your Body 

One of the worst things you can do for your health motivation and lifestyle is to ensure that you are nourishing your body properly. When you are fully nourished with enough calories and the best meals with ingredients full of vitamins and minerals, you will be more motivated to get exercising and follow your regime. Make sure that you aren’t missing meals, even if you’re busy. You should ideally be eating 3 full meals as well as snacks every day, so your body can be fully nourished. When your body is getting the energy it needs, you will find it much easier to go to the gym and do sports. Nourishing your body adequately is one of the best ways you can stay motivated to be healthy every day. 

Invest In Your Health 

One of the best ways to keep yourself motivated to stay healthy is by investing time, energy and money into your health. If you really need help motivating yourself, hire a nutritionist or personal trainer in order to hold you accountable and help you reach your goals. Paying for help with your lifestyle and having someone there to keep you on track can be one of the best motivators when it comes to exercising well. They are experts in keeping people motivated, and investing in your health will motivate you to stick to it!

Exercise With A Friend

Another way you can do this is by enlisting the help of a close friend. They can help you like a personal trainer, and help to keep you accountable and on track with your goals. However, they also provide companionship and support if you easily get bored when doing exercise. If you and a friend want to cultivate a healthy lifestyle together, joining a gym or dance class together can help you keep going. By making exercise a social event, you will be more likely to go, and keep motivated to keep getting up and moving!

Move The Way That You Like

If you hate running with a passion, there is no point in trying to force yourself to go running. Ultimately, you will give up on running and a healthy lifestyle. Instead, try and find things that you actually want to do and enjoy. Sit down and think about the sorts of exercises that you’ve enjoyed in the past – do you like team or solo sports? Do you like being in the water? Do you like to do weights or cardio, or do you just want to dance? Sign yourself up for sports that you will enjoy, and stick to the sports and activities you like. You will be much more likely to stay motivated to keep going if you actually enjoy it!

Reward Yourself

When you’re cultivating a healthy lifestyle, one of the best things you can do is reward yourself when you meet your goals. However, instead of rewarding yourself with things that will set you back such as sweets or chocolate, reward yourself with something that will aid your new healthy lifestyle journey. For example, treating yourself to some gym leggings or a full tracksuit to wear while you’re exercising will further motivate you to get moving. Rewarding yourself when you meet your goals will make it more likely that you will stay motivated. 

Have A Great Schedule 

One of the best ways you can stay motivated to be healthy every day is to have a schedule to stick to. Having a set time for eating your meals, doing your exercises and getting movement can add structure to your life, and make being healthy much easier, as it becomes part of your everyday routine. Once a habit is part of your everyday routine, it is much harder to break, meaning that you will keep doing your healthy habits. Putting a healthy living schedule for your daily life in place is one of the best ways to stay motivated and healthy. 

Have A Great Role Model

Choosing a fitness role model who actually inspires you is one of the best things you can do to remain motivated and dedicated to a healthy lifestyle. For example, you could choose a celebrity who you admire, but you need to be careful. Fit and healthy celebrities that you look up to could have had plastic surgery or a mummy makeover, which could lead you to have unrealistic expectations for yourself. You can’t exercise your body to look like it’s had plastic surgery, so you could end up becoming unmotivated. Instead, you should choose a role model who is dedicated to their fitness and lifestyle, so you can emulate their lifestyle and routine. 

Taking care of yourself and not overworking yourself is one of the most important things you can do when you want to stay motivated to be healthy – your mental health is just as important as your physical health! Improve your health motivation today and include some of these things in your everyday routine.
